The Best Chest and Triceps Exercise

Dynamite Dip

Most of the very best exercises for building the body are the simplest. Think about it - the deadlift, squat and bench are all simple in nature but yield the most results. The same is true for the dip.

The dip has a few huge positive factors going for it. Many professional bodybuilders have noted that if you want to build a huge bench press output, you need to dip. Powerlifters (the guys with the really big bench press poundage) realize this and include the dip as one of their key support exercises.

There is another benefit from consistently dipping - huge arms. The late Robert Kennedy, publisher of MuscleMag, pointed out that if you want to build huge arms, you need to dip. However, just dipping only gets you there marginally. Kennedy was referring to weighted dipping, which takes the dip workout to a whole new level.

Weighted dipping really builds the triceps and chest, and gets the core and shoulders involved somewhat as well. However, don’t just jump into the weighted dip immediately. Work your way up to it by spending some time on the body weight dip first. When you can perform 20-25 repetitions in good form, it will be time to move up to the weighted dip.

And what is good form? A full range of motion. Don't cheat by doing half reps because you are only short-circuiting your own development. Instead, go down as far as possible and back up all the way to a full extension of the arms. When you can do this 20-25 times, you are ready to move on to the weighted challenge.

For the weighted dip, a weight vest is best. A second option is a weight belt that allows you to load up a dumbbell to increase the weight load. And there are some dipping machines that enable you to attach to a weight stack and dip away.

Start your weighted dipping moderately with perhaps a 20 or 25 pound load, then work your way up to ever heavier weights. Again, forego the cheating and focus on a full range of motion. Pump out the reps. When you can do 10 weighted dips, take the weight load up another notch. Add 10 pounds and start working your way up again.

As you get into the weighted dip your bench press poundage should go up in a few weeks as your triceps and chest fill out with more rock hard muscle. If your triceps need a dose of size and power, the weighted dip will get you there.

Good Nutrition

Make sure that your diet contains all the essential nutrients for good health. Eating a wide variety of foods from all the food groups will help you get the vitamins and minerals you need. If you eat less than 1,200 calories a day, you may benefit from taking a daily vitamin and mineral supplement. Adequate protein is important because it prevents muscle tissue from breaking down and repairs all body tissues such as skin and teeth. To get adequate protein in your diet, make sure you eat Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts every day. These foods are all good sources of protein.

A daily fiber intake of 20 to 30 grams. Adequate fiber helps with proper bowel function. If you were to eat 1 cup of bran cereal, 1/2 cup of carrots, 1/2 cup of kidney beans, a medium-sized pear, and a medium-sized apple together in 1 day, you would get about 30 grams of fiber.

No more than 30 percent of calories, on average, from fat a day, with less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat (such as fat from meat, butter, and eggs). Limiting fat to these levels reduces your risk for heart disease and may help you lose weight. In addition, you should limit the amount of cholesterol in your diet. Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in animal products such as meat and eggs. Your diet should include no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day (one egg contains about 215 milligrams of cholesterol, and 3.5 ounces of cooked hamburger contain 100 milligrams of cholesterol).

At least 8 to 10 glasses, 8 ounces each, of water or water-based beverages, a day. You need more water if you exercise a lot.

These nutrients should come from a variety of low-calorie, high nutrient foods. One way to get variety -- and with it, an enjoyable and nutritious diet - is to choose foods each day from the food groups.
